Barnegat Light Fiberglass Supply LLC, is one of New Jersey’s leading wholesalers of fiberglass, resin, and related materials. BLFS offers next day delivery statewide and regional delivery to the five surrounding states within 36 hours.
Owner and prize winning boat builder, Thomas Maher has more than 40 years experience in the fiberglass industry. He has hands-on knowledge of the products he sells.
Tom’s first lessons in fiberglass began in 1971 at a Beach Haven, New Jersey marina and boat rental business. He learned to make Garvies, 26-foot traditional bay boats; by way of making his own plug and mold. He became yard manager and eventually started his own boat building and repair business, Maher Marine Repair, in 1980. During these years he also obtained a 100-ton captain’s license, did some commercial fishing and sailed the Caribbean.
In 1982, he partnered with his mentor and began applying the artistry and technology of boat building to the roofing trade. The novel idea of using fiberglass materials to build decks on Long Beach Island homes was and is a huge success. The popular decks create beautiful outdoor living spaces and function as fully waterproof roofs.
In 1996 Tom purchased his mentor’s business, Fiberglass Services, and merged it with T. Maher Fiberglass Decks and Roofs to become Maher Boatworks & Fiberglass Services, LLC of Barnegat Light, New Jersey. The company built and maintained a large variety of fiberglass boats, including parts for U.S. Navy destroyers and submarines.

Because of his long local history and connections in the trades, national wholesaler Composites One approached Tom about becoming a distributor. In 2001, he opened the doors of Barnegat Light Fiberglass Supply. In 2006 he purchased warehousing in West Creek, New Jersey because proximity to the Garden State Parkway provides easy access for his customers.
Since 2007, Tom’s focus has been on the wholesale business while keeping his hand on building small parts.
His newest venture is CompositeWorks, LLC, a partnership with his wife Joyce that combines their artistic sensibilities and exacting craftsmanship. The new company includes interest in green energy projects and government contracting, and utilizes closed cavity bag molding, light resin transfer molding and vacuum infusion processes.
Classes offered include a daylong demonstration called “Closed Molding Techniques.” It is taught at BLFS in collaboration with Composites One. To help clients better understand the design requirements for conforming to residential building codes and assuring a watertight house; Tom also offers a class called “Fiberglass Decks, Roofs and Utility Room Applications.” Call BLFS to set up a session of either class.
